These photos of Egypt’s Western Desert showcase the breadth and wonder of one of Egypt’s most remote and beautiful regions.
When my family first visited the Western Desert in Egypt in 2020, we had grand plans. Exploring the vast desert, diving into the wonders of the country’s most beautiful and mysterious town, bathing in salt pools, and strolling through valleys lined with the bones of ancient whales among towering sand dunes.
Our journey didn’t work out as expected. These photos of Egypt’s Western Desert showcase our five-year journey exploring these incredible lands.
On our second day in Siwa, while Christina and I were enjoying tea in the sand, boys raced down the dunes on sandboards, and we got an alert. A storm was racing through the desert, and if we didn’t leave immediately, we would be stranded. No one knew how long.
We raced back to Cairo, the rain hitting just an hour into the eight-hour journey and pounding us relentlessly.
The rest of the Western Desert would have to wait.
In 2025, we had the chance to return. A month-long travel adventure through Africa. And there was no better place to begin than in the Western Desert.
Wadi El Rayan, Bahariya, the Black Desert, the White Desert, and more. Finally, we could say that we had explored this remote section of Egypt thoroughly. And it has stuck with me ever since.
From this collection, my photo of the Amun Temple in Siwa won gold at the 2021 Travel Media Association of Canada Awards for Sense of Place. My video of Egypt’s Western Desert also won Gold for Virtual Storytelling at the 2026 Society of American Travel Writers – Canada awards (linked at the bottom of this article).
