This is my collection of photos of Mount Nemrut, Turkiye, taken during an early morning sunrise at the summit of this incredible statue-topped mountain.
Western Turkiye, Istanbul, and Cappadocia may get the bulk of the fame when it comes to the most amazing destinations in Turkiye, but the far east of the country holds some stunning history and mind-bending beauty that most travelers to the country completely miss out on.
After traveling through Pamukkale and the Turquoise Coast in the west, my family flew to the edge of the Syrian border with history on our minds. The first stop was a 4:00 am wake-up to climb to the summit of Mount Nemrut.
This 7,000 foot mountain is a monument and tomb to the Commagene King Antiochus I. It’s crowned by the remains of colossal statues to Greek, Persian, and Armenian gods in the first century BCE.
This is one of the most stunning and unique archaeological sites in the world and one of the most incredible places to visit in the country.
These photos of Mount Nemrut are all from a single visit where we experience the mountain from dusk till early morning light.
